Marvin Brown
Marvin was born in 1951 in Hammond, Indiana. He lived there until 1962 and then moved to Lansing, Illinois where he finished his education and completed two years of college. In 1970, he was hired where his father worked, at Inland Steel, and he still works there as a crane operator, which he has been doing for 33 of his 35 years at the Steel Mill.
Marvin married his wife Barbara in 1971 and has two children and two grandchildren. In 1978, he moved to Hessville (Hammond), Indiana and in 1989, moved to Portage. In 2001, he and his wife came to the Catholic Church and his life hasn't been the same since!
Going through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) was a long process but it was worth it, according to Marvin. He and his wife received all three sacraments of initiation at St. Patrick's in Chesterton. In 2003, he and his wife felt called to the community at Nativity. After inquiring on various ministries where he could serve, he learned to become a Sacristan.
Serving at 9:00 and 11:00 AM Masses as Sacristan is a real joy to Marvin. He is a people person and has a willingness to help where needed. He is also a Lector, E.M.H.C., serves on the Liturgy Committee, the Usher Ministry, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. His is a 4th degree Knight and a member of the Honor/Color Gaurd at our Council 9114.
In his spare time he likes to read scripture, Church teachings, fiction, watch movies and do activities with his wife. Inspired by God, his wife, the staff of Nativity and many parishioners, Marvin's desire is to love and serve the Lord and His people in any way possible to keep a strong, healthy Catholic community in Portage.
If you see Marvin around, be sure to say Hi ! We hope you "Got To Know" him!!
